About Eating With Friends

Eating With Friends (EWF) involves bringing people together to enjoy a meal, make new friends and delight in new experiences.

Since its inception in 2000, EWF has become a community driven initiative with approximately twenty five EWF groups operating throughout Tasmania. There are a number of organisations involved in running the groups including:

  • Community groups
  • Schools
  • Churches
  • Neighbourhood houses
  • Ethnic communities
  • Health centres

Volunteers and workers from these organisations plan and run the group's activities.

A Steering Committee has been active since the early days of EWF. The Steering Committee has encouraged and supported new and existing groups by providing advice, support and resources.

An EWF Project is currently funded by the Department of Veterans' Affairs for two years to provide support and resources to individuals, groups and organisations wishing to establish an EWF group or be involved with an existing group.

Eating With Friends Project

June 2006 – June 2008

Goal of Project

The Eating With Friends (EWF) Project aims to promote and support the development and sustainability of volunteer EWF groups throughout the State, with a particular focus on expanding the concept and groups in the north, north east and north west of Tasmania.

Objectives

The objectives of the EWF Project are:

  1. To increase the number of EWF groups in the state by at least ten, particularly in the north, east and west regions, as a means of reducing social isolation and developing friendships amongst older Tasmanians.
  2. To promote the EWF core values and support new and existing groups in their adoption.
  3. To raise the profile of EWF through the use of promotional strategies that enhance understanding about the concept and encourage its adoption.
  4. To develop an understanding of the factors that enable or act as barriers in the operation of EWF groups.
  5. To investigate the models of support that enhance the sustainability of EWF groups and promote them.

Eating With Friends Core Values Statement

Eating With Friends aims to address the issues of social isolation and poor nutrition among older people by working with communities and volunteer groups to provide regular group meals to older, isolated Tasmanians and other target groups as may be appropriate.

The EWF groups practice and promote the EWF core values.

These values are:

  • Provide low cost, varied and nutritious meals.
  • Encourage a culture of inclusiveness – everybody is welcome to attend.
  • Target interested people who are socially isolated.
  • Draw upon and use, where able, local community resources. For example: community transport, local venues, funding opportunities, etc.
  • Provide an opportunity for community members to participate and be involved in the running of the group and meal preparation in a volunteer capacity.
  • Respond to the needs of the local community.
  • Ensure appropriate access is provided where needed. For example: transport, disabled access venues, meals for special need groups e.g. diabetic, hypertensive, high cholesterol, etc.
